Suicide squad leaves most viewers satisfied
August 11, 2016
“Suicide Squad!” The big summer movie that everyone had high hopes for! It would be the movie to save the DC movies! It would be one of the greatest superhero movies ever made! Suicide Squad is the third movie in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), which is in the same universe as Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. With the letdown of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” fans and critics were hoping that Suicide Squad would be the redemption. Was it the redeeming movie or was it just as bad as its predecessor?
Suicide Squad definitely had a lot to live up to, but did not quite meet the expectations for me. It was definitely enjoyable, but I did not love this movie. Even though it was not my favorite, it did not deserve the 26 percent review on Rotten Tomatoes. It was fun and exciting. After the movie was over, one of my friends I saw it with ran over to me, jumping up and down, saying he wanted to see it again. It was funny when it was supposed to be and serious when it needed to be.
The music in the film was different from normal movies. Instead of music composed by John Williams or Hans Zimmer, it was music from well known rap and pop artists such as Kanye, Lil’ Wayne, Imagine Dragons, and Twenty One Pilots. The more I listen to the it, the more I grow to appreciate its use in the film. The music gave the movie a different feel.
As far as the plot goes, the story is interesting in a way and not what I was expecting. That was nice on the story writer’s part. For the most part, the story made sense, but at times, it was confusing — and even a little — messy. If you do not know that much about the movie or who the characters are, do not worry, they give short backstories about most of the characters.
The movie has an all-star cast including Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne. They all work together great and make the movie entertaining. Everyone has his or her star moments in the film.
This movie is definitely different from most of the other superhero movies, especially if you like rooting for the bad guys. Overall, it was likeable and fun to watch.
PS: Yes, there is a post-credit scene. So make sure you do not walk out when the credits start rolling.
Now for the remainder of this review, I do not know how I can talk about it without some spoilers so with that said,
“SPOILER ALERT!!”
You have been warned…
The all-star cast for this movie is outstanding. Margot Robbie was a good Harley Quinn, but I feel like Will Smith and, in my opinion, Jay Hernandez stole the show. Smith’s character, Deadshot, is a trained assassin or hitman and never misses. Smith is pretty much a BA! He is a man on a mission to make money in order to provide a good life for his daughter. In the movie, Deadshot is constantly thinking of how he can help his daughter. I think this is something most parents can relate to, saying that they will do anything to provide for their kids. He is almost like the comic relief because he is always making sarcastic jokes.
Jay Hernandez plays El Diablo and he was just phenomenal. His character has the power, or as he sees it, a curse of fire. It was cool to see his character come out of his shell throughout the movie. At the beginning, it shows him and describes him as a feared mob boss. But after he is taken in, he just wants to live his life in peace and to not use his powers anymore. As the movie goes on, he tells what happened the night he got caught and it just makes you feel sad for him. It makes you kind of see him as a victim. Then towards the end, his team is being tricked into fantasies and he tells them it’s not true. He then proceeds to lead the team into the final battle. There, he kicks some major B! But as the fight goes on, it becomes too much to handle for the team and Diablo makes the ultimate sacrifice for the team. I truly enjoyed his performance throughout the movie. He stood out to me more and honestly, was even better than Will Smith’s Deadshot.
What did I think of Jarod Leto’s version of The Joker? To be honest, he is not in the movie a whole lot. It seemed like Warner Brothers were falsely advertising. In the trailers, it made him seem like he was going to be the main character when he is actually in the movie for maybe a total of 15 minutes. Many people are trying to compare his Joker to Heath Ledger’s Joker. What they do not understand is that both of the jokers are completely different. Ledger’s Joker is a legend, but he was in the movie the entire time. Leto’s Joker was not in the movie enough for us to compare him. In my opinion, he weirded me out. He was a complete psychopath. He kind of came off as a mob boss and/or a gangster. But that is what The Joker is supposed to be; a psychopath that is … well … a clown. I cannot say that he is my favorite (because no one can replace Ledger), but I am definitely interested in seeing him in future DC movies like the upcoming Batman movie.
Throughout the movie, there are a few Easter eggs placed in it. For those of you who do not know what an Easter egg is, it is a hidden item in a movie, TV show, or other media that hints something else is to come in another movie or later in the movie. There were two big Easter eggs that I noticed. The first one is at the beginning where The Flash shows up to stop one of the villains. The Flash is going to be in the upcoming Justice League movie, so it was kind of a sneak peek of him in action. The second biggest is in the post-credit scene. In the scene, Ben Affleck (who we know as Bruce Wayne/Batman) is seen sitting at a table with one of the characters. She hands him a file with information about Barry Allen (The Flash) and Arthur Curry (Aquaman). This is to hint that Bruce is trying to assemble a team, which will later become the Justice League. It was exciting to see both of these Easter eggs in the movie.
This movie was a great one and pleasing to watch. Not a favorite but definitely likeable.
I would rate this movie: 7.7/10.
Would recommend to a friend.
