Students react to chemistry club

Recently Chemistry teacher Teresa Hodge started a Chemistry club, open for all students to join. Numerous students last semester suggested the idea to Hodge so she decided to begin the process of starting the club.

“My students in the fall saw the Physics clubs doing things and they wanted to do more chemistry experiments, so they asked me if we could start a chemistry club and I was happy to help,” Hodge said.

Since there are three Chemistry classes there is only a short amount of lab time that each class has, so by having a chemistry club students are offered more lab time to participate in longer experiments.

“Chemistry club just recently started, but there are several things we plan to do. We have found multiple YouTube videos that show different chemical experiments, so we are going to choose an experiment once a month that we can do safely at school. Then we are going to do the large lab experiment that they normally wouldn’t have time to do in class,” Hodge said.

The club is growing every day because the students are excited to participate in a new club. People in the club do not necessarily have to be good at Chemistry, but they do need to be aware of safety protocol.

“We’ve only had three meetings so anyone is still welcomed to join. We currently have 30 students in the club, and we will meet on Mondays either before or after school because I am available both times,” Hodge said.

Hodge hopes that through this club more people will begin to appreciate and take interest in not only just chemistry but also other types of science and the many things it has to offer.

“My main goal for the club is to get people interested in opportunities that science and technology have to offer and maybe even help them look into jobs in those fields. We also plan to take numerous field trips that will intrigue the students” Hodge said.

Students in the club appreciate her willingness to be the leader because of her hands-on teaching style and her ability to make the experiments not only informative, but also safe and fun.

“I think that Mrs. Hodge is an excellent teacher to be leading chemistry club because she always makes things interesting, and she allows everyone to be involved,” sophomore Chloe Black said.
