Students will be embracing a new school-wide hall pass system, with vibrant lanyards hanging around their necks, flashing a bright or dark indicator to let administrators and teachers know where a student is headed while in the hallways.
“The new hall pass system was adopted from another high school who had had a lot of success with decreasing the amount of students in the hallways,” assistant principal Jennifer Gray said. “Because of their success, the administration wanted to see if we could have the same success at SHS. Our previous system made it often difficult to determine where a student might be headed without reviewing the teacher log book at the time that the administrator and student talked.”
Teachers will no longer have to determine whether or not a student is in the correct location, nor will they have to stop and ask the student where they should be. The color of the lanyard will reveal that information.
The goal of this new system is to reduce the number of students in the hallways, as well as teachers and administrators from wondering or asking a student if they are or will be going to the correct location.
It is unclear how long the current hall pass system will remain for the remainder of the school year. Some students think the hall pass system would be effective, while others are still undecided.
“I personally do not think that the new hall pass system is effective,” senior Jaylah Ollie said. “I say this because the colors are the same for each teacher and each hall. Someone could be walking from the right place and others could be just wasting time and skipping class. I think we should go back to each hall having their own color. It is less confusing and easier to keep up with.”
