Sparkman High School has become increasingly strict on the dress code this year. The dress code was posted in the student handbook, but it has caused a lot of miscommunication and confusion. Lots of people have misread the new dress code or do not fully understand it. The dress code is mainly the same other than a few minor changes. Although it is being heavily enforced this year.
This year as well as in the past; you have to be neatly dressed/groomed, and hair should not obstruct anyone’s vision. Your appearance must not draw unnecessary attention or cause any kind of disruption. Coats should not be excessively large, bulky, or long. Dresses and skirts are
allowed as long as they are not revealing. If you are wearing jeans, there must not be holes above the knee unless they are covered. Spaghetti straps, off-the-shoulder tops, crop tops and sheer clothing are also not allowed. Clothes are not allowed to be too tight or oversized that they drag on the floor due to safety hazards.
Girls’ shorts must be at least the length down to your fingertips, and leggings should be covered to the same length. Pajama pants and other sleepwear are not allowed. Clothing also should not picture or have lettering containing or advertising drugs, alcohol or violence. Hoodies are allowed but hoods are not, along with any sort of hat or bandana. This also includes sunglasses, visors and hair picks. Headscarves are only excused for medical or religious reasons but documentation may be required. Head coverings are allowed during rainy weather but cannot be worn in the school building. Face coverings like; face masks, neck gaiters or any other article of clothing intended to cover the face are not allowed unless it is being worn for hygienic reasons, but must not draw unnecessary attention to oneself.
Tattoos with any writing, pictures or symbols that are inappropriate must be covered by the student’s clothing and must stay covered. Shoes must be worn properly laced, strapped or fastened. House shoes or slippers are not allowed. Crocs and slides are allowed, but it is asked to not wear them when it’s rainy or wet due to safety concerns.
The dress code applies during normal school hours, however, these rules may be enforced at school functions or activities. Principles and other administrators have the authority to make judgments and prohibit any clothing deemed to be breaking the dress code.
