Alabama Weather Reaches an All-time Low

Colder temperatures have risen across Alabama, falling in the low twenties to below zero degrees. Thursday night through Saturday morning, an inch of snow or more is predicted to hit Huntsville. The roads are said to become ‘hazardous’, with snow and ice coating them. We are said to receive snow, ice and a wintery mix come Thursday evening, with Friday’s weather worsening.

Earlier this week, snow flurries were seen across North Alabama. This is a sign that winter is still here, and we will see more of it this month. Between Thursday and Saturday afternoon, 2-5 inches of snow, sleet and ice are expected to hit the roads, with meteorologists advising cars and people to stay off the road. Cullman, Calhoun, Limestone, Morgan and Marshall counties are predicted to be hit by the storm. Highways like I-20 and bridges and overpasses are said to be extremely dangerous and can become closed come Thursday night.

Madison County Schools announced Thursday night that all schools would be closed on Friday, January 10, 2025, due to extreme weather conditions for the safety of its students, staff and faculty. Around midnight, snow flurries began to fall across North Alabama. Around three A.M., full sheets of snow were on the ground, with roads completely iced over, with some highways closing. We received rain later that day, melting some of the existing snow. The total amount of snow received in Huntsville was about four and a half inches, with some areas getting a total of six inches or more.

Saturday and Sunday came with the melting of the snow and ice. Sunday morning roads were almost all clear, except for iced-over bridges across Huntsville, which are still too dangerous to cross. School will resume on Monday, January 13, 2025, with all activities continuing until further notice. Even though the roads are beginning to clear day by day, it’s important to stay safe while driving. Make sure to take precautions these coming days when coming to school, as black ice could form from the rain freezing, as low temperatures are still present.
