Putting the squeeze on skinny jeans
December 15, 2014
A student’s style is an extension of themselves. Clothes can be so much more than just covering for our bodies – they are expressions of our moods, our personalities.
While in school, we are already subject to rules and regulations that ban certain clothing styles such as short skirts and hats. Not everybody wears these things, however, so it has a small impact on the student body as a whole. But what if something that most of us consider a staple in our wardrobes appeared on this list? Specifically – skinny jeans.
All over the country, skinny jeans are being targeted as inappropriate for everyday school attire. The reasoning? They create a distraction. I am sure that if skinny jeans were going be a serious distraction that it would have been discovered long ago when they first came into style. The ban includes both males and females, so it is not gender specific.
If skinny jeans were not such a key component in everyone’s closet, this would not be a problem. But what teenager, especially female, does not wear skinny jeans on nearly a daily basis? Skinny jeans are what stores sell. Skinny jeans are easily available. It does not make sense to place a ban on something that is such a staple item. As long as the jeans are not revealing and the wearer uses them appropriately, then the argument of them being a distraction is invalid.
