New veteran statistics come to light

By Patrick Rickles, Reporter

After 2014, it was announced that the overall unemployment for veterans has fallen to just over 5 percent. Finally amid all the mistakes and scandals of the past year, America has gotten something right.

All Americans know what sacrifices our current military and our veterans make every day. They not only risk their bodies on a daily basis, but they also risk their minds with mental afflictions such as PTSD. These men and women risk everything to help make a difference in the world, and to help keep us safe. Unfortunately, it is a widely known fact that these brave people are often unemployed. Whether it is due to a disability or a lack of a college degree, many veterans are often looked over during interviews.

However, times are changing. More and more businesses are opening their doors to America’s veterans. Whether it is due to the popular surge to help employ America’s heroes, or for other reasons veterans are finally being employed more often than not.

However, the mission is not over yet.

Over 12% of all homeless adults are veterans. This means that there are thousands of veterans that do not have a roof over their head during a storm or anywhere to stay. In what world does this seem right to anyone?

As much as America has improved on treating our veterans, one would think that the first thing that we would do as a nation is take our veterans off of the street. America is better than this. We have crossed oceans, split the atom and put a man on the moon, but helping serve those that have served us seems to be just beyond our grasp.

These men and women have sacrificed so much for us and continue to do so every day. The least our society could do is make sure that these people at least have a roof over their head. Our society has made recent leaps and bounds in our treatment of veterans. Only time will tell if this is just another fad.
