Student gets kicked out
More stories from Emily Baucum
Recently a Sparkman student has attempted to go to Hazel Green High School’s homecoming with her date, a student that attends Hazel Green. Dating someone from a different high school isn’t that uncommon. We may live in a huge city like Huntsville, but it is not that huge.
The tickets were purchased and the attire was picked out. The only thing left was the dance itself. Preparing for these types of dances is a key factor in the whole pizzaz of homecoming and prom. You have to find a creative way to ask, match his boxtie with your dress, decide whether you want to take your pictures at Big Spring Park or Bridgestreet and pinterest everything and anything with the word homecoming on it.
Once they arrived, they signed in with their given names and within 30 minutes they were both kicked out because one was not attending that school. The fact that only Hazel Green students can go to Hazel Green homecoming is absurd. When faculty denies the ability to bring students from other schools, it is not only limiting their students body attendance, but the students interaction with their community.
Out the door flies a memory that could have been made or a good time that has now been lost.
The only way I could see this rule as having any purpose is if it has been placed in order for students to show as much school spirit as they can by coming together and mingling with their own classmates.
All in all it could be avoided. Students should be allowed the privilege of bringing their date from another school unless that right is taken advantage of. It would bring in more money for Hazel Green to put towards other events or items around the school, and would create an overall happier student body. Sparkman does a good job of keeping most of our events community based where more than just Sparkman’s students are involved.
