Water bottle fight leads to possible loss of pep rallies
The good always seems to go hand in hand with the bad at Sparkman. Our Friday pep rally was a huge success. The students were loud, the teachers were pumped and people were getting hit with bottles of varying contents. From simple shakers to bottles full of water sabotaged to explode their contents, all manner of objects were thrown creating numerous problems.
As far as anyone knows, nobody was hurt in the battle between the classes. Overall, participants in the pep rally were annoyed when they were affected. Either getting hit directly or having water splashed over you cannot be an enjoyable experience. Pep rallies are meant to excite everyone about an upcoming game, not to harass other students.
The inconveniences are beyond simply getting wet; one report cites that one bottle thrown still had drying paint contained inside. When thrown, this bottle burst spilling paint onto the gym floor. Surprisingly enough, our cheerleaders are responsible for cleaning the post-rally mess left in the gym. Even though a plethora of groups use the facility to perform, the cheerleaders alone are tasked with what is left afterward. To further this injustice, they were the ones who had to remove the paint.
Regrettably, the year’s first pep rally may in fact end up being its’ last. Due to the behavior displayed by a few dysfunctional students, the majority of us may be punished. Principal Chris Shaw is considering forgoing all pep rallies for the rest of the year. There is a possibility that we will all be punished, and miss out on a school tradition, simply because a few people made questionable decisions.
It is doubtful that events like this will cease entirely, but hopefully this threat will push the issue into submission. Hopefully, students will be able to convince other students to act appropriately. It is a simple decision to make. We either have a good pep rally, or we will not have any at all.
