The boys’ varsity soccer team attended the Gulf Coast Classic tournament where they defeated Bob Jones 3-2 to win the championship. The tournament was held in Gulf Shores over spring break. It consisted of eight teams from across the south. The boys took on teams such as Madison County High School, Gulf Shores High School, Coffee County High School and of course, Bob Jones.
The team had wins against MCHS, GSHS and CCHS but was faced with a bigger challenge when it came to Bob Jones.
Sophomore Stephen Sallas mentioned that the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regular play.
Since the game was tied, the team had to go into overtime to determine which school would win the tournament. Overtime consisted of two 5 minutes halves unless a team were to score the “golden goal.” At that point the game would end.
Junior Tucker Haverkamp was able to score the game winning goal with an assist from junior Brennan Bell.
“Nathaniel Mellberg threw the ball in and Brennan Bell flicked it on to me. I hit it with the inside of my foot and curved it or floated over the keeper,” Haverkamp said.
The team feels good about their recent success and hopes to take the same energy into the playoffs next month.
