Boys basketball claim area wins
December 15, 2015
The varsity boys’ basketball team has claimed their first two area wins of the season over James Clemens and Hazel Green.
The team defeated James Clemens, 67-59 in the first area win of the season. James Clemens has skilled guards who can shoot and they are bigger physically. The Senators, a young team with six sophomores, did not feel intimidated.
“There was no pressure for me. I believed that if we played hard all four quarters, then the scoreboard would take care of everything,” sophomore Kaliq Green said.
The second area win came with five last minute free throws by junior J.P. Fletcher. The team led most of the game with silly fouls making the game closer in the end. The score was 63-59.
“Fletcher had ice in his veins in those last few minutes. I knew he would make them and told my assistant coaches that he would,” head coach Jamie Coggins said.
The team has had a different focus in the area games and feel that they are in a good place in the area at this moment. Sophomore Amarius Beasley feels the games are about overcoming and facing fears.
“Personally, winning to me means that I am the aggressor and I’m playing my hardest. I’m a fierce competitor and I will do anything in my power to win. I hate to lose,” Beasley said.
The team faces their third area opponent, Bob Jones, on Friday night. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Senator gymnasium.
