Between March 19-22 Sparkman High School held the annual Madison County Tennis Tournament, the boys team won county, giving them back-to-back titles. For the girls, Anna Fiorucci had a stellar performance becoming the girls singles champion.
The boys team departed, taking four out of six games in the singles. Taylor Muir defeated Buckhorn 6-1, 6-3; Jack Horton also beat Buckhorn 6-1, 6-1; Watkins Kelly beat Madison County High 6-4, 6-4; Christian Taylor beat Buckhorn 6-2, 6-2. The boys team played tremendously as their overall record in the singles tournament was 8-2.
In the doubles tournament, Sparkman boys swept all opponents in the bracket and finished 3-0 in the boys doubles. Taylor Muir and Jack Horton took on Madison County High and won 6-1, 6-1. Colt Bradley and Thomas Wright beat Buckhorn 6-1, 6-4. Watkins Kelly and Christian Taylor overcame Buckhorn 6-0, 6-1.
In the girl’s singles, Sparkman’s only two wins would come from Anna Fiorucci who seized the number one bracket against Hazel Green 6-3, 6-1. This is her fourth time out of five years that she has won the girl’s singles championship. Fiorucci’s heroic efforts would not be enough as Hazel Green would win the five remaining brackets in the singles tournament. The girl’s record for singles would be 2-5. In the doubles, Ashlyn and Haley Putman would make it to the final game in a bracket but lose 6-2, 6-1 to Hazel Green.
Sparkman cemented themselves in county history by taking the 2016 County Tournament. The tennis team is only midway through the season and they are already exhibiting a promising season. Five games still remain in the next two weeks before the sectional tournament which if they win they advance to the State tournament, otherwise their season will conclude.
