Track Team Sweeps State
The Track and Field team competed at the state meet in Gulf Shores. The athletes set state records and achieved their personal bests.
Sophomore Lauryn Hall placed first in the 100 and third in the 200 meter dash She is also part of the girls 4×100 relay team. Hall and fellow teammates, eighth grader Amani Blair, sophomore Lexi Rice and junior Aubrey Parker placed in third.
“I was glad that our times were better this year compared to last years, but next year we are going to come back and do better,” Rice said.
Junior pole vaulter, Gabrielle Griner, continued to earn points for her team this season by finishing in fourth place.
Freshman Charles Lewis set two state records taking the gold in both the 200 and 400 meter dash. Also scoring points for the team was junior Jake Russell with his eighth place finish in the 800 meter dash.
The boys 4×100 team including senior Trey Gideon, Charles Lewis and juniors Chase Parker and Carlos Burwell finished in second place at the meet. The 4×400 team made up of seniors Seth Graham, Bailey Herfurth, Charles Lewis and junior Milan Wall also earned gold for the team with a first place finish. The 4×800 team including freshman Shafi Muhammad, Seth Graham, Bailey Herfurth and Jake Russell placed in fifth.
“I was excited that we got to stand on the podium at state,” Hall said.
Overall the girl’s team finished in ninth place and the boys finished in sixth.
