Tennis County Tournament
April 11, 2017
On March 24, 2017, the Sparkman High Tennis team hosted the Madison County Tennis Tournament Championship. The Varsity Boy’s team brought home their third consecutive championship title while multiple players returned placed individually.
In the first round of matches held on Thursday, Jack Horton and Thomas Wright (#1 doubles) advanced to finals after beating Buckhorn 6-3; 6-1, while (#3 doubles) Dalton Counter and Ethan Cuzzort, moved on to finals after their huge victory over Hazel Green 6-4; 6-0.
Senior, Jack Horton (#1) had a successful win over Hazel Green 6-4; 6-4. Junior, Thomas Wright (#2) tied it up against Madison County 6-4; 5-7, sending them into a tie breaker in which Wright won 12-10. Sophomore, Watkins Kelly (#3) was victorious over Buckhorn in his match scoring 6-0; 6-0. Junior, Christian Taylor (#4) beat Buchhorn 6-0; 6-2. Seventh grader, Ethan Cuzzort (#5), finished the night for the senators with a 6-2; 6-2 victory against Madison County High School. Every win advanced each player to their position in the Championship, working towards the title of County Champs.
Fridays weather provided a perfect afternoon to bring home another Championship. With temperatures in the mid seventies friends, families and fans sat up chairs at Monrovia Middle school preparing for another day of great tennis.
The afternoon began with a 7-6; 6-2 win for Cuzzort and Counter against Madison County in the number three doubles category. The team’s number one and two doubles fought out long matches but unfortunately couldn’t defeat Hazel Green or Madison County for the Championship.
Wright won the finals match for the number two position 2-6; 7-6; 10-4 against Hazel Green making him the county champ. Due to the vacancy of lights on the courts, Watkins Kelly, Christian Taylor and Ethan Cuzzort were unable to finish their single matches. These matches however, are scheduled to be made up sometime within the next two weeks.
Because Sparkman finished the tournament with the most overall wins, they were declared the 2017 Madison County Champions.
