Earth Day is an occasion that comes around once a year to encourage people to help improve the environment.

On May 9, 2014, the environment club hosted a fundraiser during third block. The fundraiser was a walkathon to help promote their club and raise awareness for the world’s environmental situation. The fundraising idea was thought up by the environmental science teacher Twyla Maxtion. Maxtion used this chance to inform people on ways people can help the environment.

“People can help the environment in many ways. Recycling, one of major things people can do, they can plant gardens and water conservations are some of things people can do. The specific purpose of the fundraiser is to buy new recycling bins for classrooms so that more classrooms can recycle,” Maxtion said.

The environmental club is relatively new club to the school that started this year. The environmental club is the club that set up the recycling system in the school. People can join the club by contacting Mrs. Maxtion or seeing her in room 231.

“We are trying to raise a lot of awareness on environmental issues, not just recycling, but right now that is our main focus. We are trying to educate the school about recycling what they should do, how to recycle and what they can or can’t recycle,” sophomore Lindsay Rogers said.
