Students take over for resigned teacher
September 3, 2014
Following Spanish teacher Jasmine Durham’s resignation, three Spanish Honor Society students are stepping up to teach Spanish I until a teacher is hired.
President Yolanda Bennett, vice president Emma Glubrech and secretary Desalyn Johnson of the Spanish Honor Society have been teaching students the basics of the language for several weeks now; Durham’s departure prompted the classes to fall behind.
“[Spanish I] didn’t have a teacher because their sub didn’t know Spanish,” Emma Glubrech said.
The classes are being instructed on the fundamentals of Spanish: subjects, verbs, questions. They receive the lesson plans minutes before class starts, and then carry out whatever is on the agenda for that day.
“It’s fun, I really like it. You get to see all the different personalities and you get to help. I really like helping people,” Johnson said.
Fellow Spanish teacher Carla Terry hand-picked Bennett, Glubrech and Johnson to teach because of their status in the Spanish Honor Society club and their dedication to community service. The upper-level students will utilize their skills next semester in AP Spanish, their fifth Spanish class.
“It was basic things we were teaching, it was a pretty good review, and it helped me tremendously in public speaking,” Glubrech said.
On Sept. 2 a new Spanish teacher was hired, bringing an end to their teaching.
“It was fun for a week,” Yolanda Bennett said, “But it wouldn’t be something I want to do for the rest of my life.”
