On May 19, 564 members of the class of 2015 will make their final debut. Adorned in caps, gowns and smiles of pride, the senior class will cross the stage at the Von Braun Center in the Propst Arena and officially be recognized for not only the four years they spent at Sparkman, but the entirety of their education that lead up to graduation — a time-honored, serious tradition.

“Graduation is really symbolic of leaving behind one chapter in your life and starting a new one — whether that’s college, a job or whatever your case may be. Walking across that stage is like walking into the next chapter of your life,” English teacher Ashley Fitch said. “When you walk across and switch that tassel to the other side, you’ve crossed that threshold. It’s really important and a beautiful time where you just grow up in that moment when you switch your tassel.”

Many seniors have come to consider Sparkman a home away from home, and leaving it behind will be a bittersweet moment. The halls they walked every day are now turning into just a distant memory as their futures push them forward and the old, red brick building stays behind.

“You grow to love Sparkman as a place, and it’s almost a second home to me now. It’s going to be difficult to move on to a different place in life, but I’m excited about what’s going to happen,” senior Slade Hogan said.

Seemingly everyone has some type of advice for the accomplished young adults — proud parents, friends and teachers alike. Well-wishings and life strategies accompany teary-eyed hugs. The uncertain future is starting, and many are nervous to see what life will bring. Math teacher Becky Chapman has some suggestions for those starting their new adventures.

“Be open-minded; be ready for change. The idea you have now for yourself may change, and you may not end up with what you expect,” Chapman said.
