Pitch Perfect 2 falls flat in face of hype

While its’ predecessor blew audiences away, “Pitch Perfect 2” falls flat. Starring actresses Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick, produced by Elizabeth Banks, Paul Brooks, Max Handelman and written by Kay Cannon, this movie was one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
The sequel to the 2012 hit “Pitch Perfect”, “Pitch Perfect 2” was a success financially before it ever saw the inside of a theater. But for all the marketing hype and excitement, the movie is thin and falls short in content. Perhaps, the series lost it’s focus in face of no longer being “the underdog”, whereas the first movie enjoyed that advantage.
Pitch Perfect 2 will have you laughing just as hard as before, but in the end, viewers are left feeling empty. With so much hype leading up to its release, it feels like a missed opportunity. Rotten tomatoes critics’ give the movie a 68 percent in comparison to “Pitch Perfect’s” 81 percent. The audience seems to have generally enjoyed the film giving it a 71 percent.
While quirky, beloved characters guide the movie, new characters feel flat on screen and create unnecessary and tedious conflicts. Hilarious jokes and references again steal the show just as witty as before, but the first movie’s success spanned from its emergence as more than just a comedy but also as a relatable, emotion filled story. It’s sequel did not follow suit. In contrast to it’s predecessor, the movie’s flow feels off. While Universal missed the content mark this time, “Pitch Perfect 2” is a funny, fun- spirited movie, good for the upcoming summer. It’s definitely worth seeing, but it does leave a want for something more.
