Students help spread holiday cheer with senior citizens

In keeping with the holiday spirit, some National Honor Society volunteers decided to spend some of their time helping out senior citizens in a local rest home. Volunteers spent two hours volunteering at the retirement home to spend time with those that might not have a family this holiday season.
“We were visiting with the senior citizens and we talked with them and wished them Happy Holidays while giving them homemade cards and small gifts,” senior Connor Murphy said.
NHS volunteers showed up to the retirement home at noon and began to start spreading around some holiday spirit. Students went from room to room giving out gifts and having conversations with the residents. The gifts included items like lotion, soap and Kleenex. While performing these good deeds students could not help feeling pleased at how they were received.
“It felt amazing to be able to bring even a small amount of joy to these people’s lives and seeing their appreciation and smiles made it feel that much better,” Murphy said.
Many of the staff and residents gave thanks for the fact that teenagers would take time out of one of their Saturdays to spend time with them to talk and give them gifts and cards.
“Many of them were surprised; many expressed the fact that they receive very little outside visitors in the first place, so the cards and small items we gave to them in addition to our company ultimately made them feel grateful and happy,” senior Damond Lai said.
