Alabama wants to better its transportation by introducing the popular transport system Uber to Huntsville.

Uber began at an American International transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco. It was founded by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp in March of 2009. Uber has made its way from California to New Jersey and now Alabama is joining in the growing trend.

“We absolutely want transportation network companies to come and operate in Huntsville,” City Administrator John Hamilton said in an interview with al.com. Transportation Network Companies(TNC) are how cities and companies like Uber define the business model of networked part-time drivers ferrying passengers to make extra money.

Alabama has already started its reword on Uber.  The city of Mobile has Uber while Birmingham and Tuscaloosa are working on establishing it.

“I think they are for bigger cities and they are convenient because you do not have to try to get a taxi,” sophomore Jessica Turnage said. “If they came here it would be cool but I do not think it is needed.”

Uber consists of drivers and their personally owned cars, who sign up for a job at driving people around. Uber can be reached via the “Uber” app any time you need. Setting up an Uber requires a credit or debit card, to avoid handling cash. Uber’s are available 24 hours a day.

“We stand ready to work with Huntsville officials, should they want to create a new section of the transportation code for ride sharing that recognizes its unique business model,” spokeswoman Kaitlin Durkosh said.
