Student raises peacocks

Peacocks are beautiful birds that have intriguing features that capture any viewer’s eye. Anyone can be lost in the alluring colors of their perfectly patterned kaleidoscopic feathers. For senior Imran Khan, raising peacocks has been a part of his life for three years.
Khan began raising peacocks after his mother brought one home from the Dog Days flea market, in Tennessee. After taking care of one, his mother has loved the experience, and soon owned four more peacocks.
“My mom likes [peacocks] because they are beautiful,” Khan said. “When she first saw one she had to have one.”
While peacocks are well-known for their attractive physical features, Khan says that they also make an interesting sound similar to human yelling. Their compelling sound and captivating feathers is what sets them apart from other birds.
““My mom thought it was unique to have [peacocks] because no one else around here has them,” Khan said.
Khan says keeping peacocks as pets is immensely similar to raising chickens. The difference between a chicken and a peacock is that a chicken can roam free whereas a peacock must stay fenced in. If they are not enclosed they may wander away from their home.
“Raising peacocks is no different than raising a chicken,” Khan said. “The difference between them is the sound they make.”
