Grilled Cheese cook off turns heads

Crimson Crier: Why did they decide to do this cook off?

Karoline Webster: The students respond better when they compete and it’s fun to do challenges. Instead of just making grilled cheese, we decided to turn it into a competition. The students had to have two different food groups besides dairy. Some of the students picked vegetables and some picked protein. They really had to be creative about it.

CC: Who were the judges and how many teams competed?

KW: The judges were Coach Stevenson, Mr. Barron, and Ms. Haynes. There were five teams who competed.

CC: What were some of the sandwiches created?

KW: There was Buffalo Chicken, Meat Lovers, Double Decker and the Sweet and Salty Pig.

Summer Maclin

CC: What was special about the Sweet and Salty Pig that made it win?

SM: It was special because the sandwich had a combination of things that everyone on our team liked. For instance my friend Rebecca likes sauteed onions and our teammate Stephanie likes bacon. So we added the bacon and onions, along with muenster and extra sharp cheddar cheese. I then mixed brown sugar and butter together. The sweetness of the brown sugar and bacon gave it that sweet and savory twist. It was also unique because everyone got to put their own idea into the sandwich.

CC: Will thus become an annual thing? Why?

KW: Absolutely. The students loved this, it made them be creative and go outside the box.
