History Teacher Releases Third Book, Hopes to Spread Faith
January 25, 2017
History teacher Ben Stevenson has recently released his third book entitled “God is Greater”.
This book is a compilation of emails that people have sent in response to a mass email that Stevenson and his brother send out weekly that says “God is greater than…”. Each response tells the opinion of each person and expresses what they believe God is greater than. They have collected these emails over the course of a year and formed them into a book. He hopes to continue and make a series of the “God is Greater” book.
“We will keep filling books with these emails as long as people keep responding. Since God is greater than everything the possibilities are endless,” Stevenson said.
Stevenson’s previous books, “Overcoming the World in Nine Innings” and “Transforming the World in Four Quarters” are about his experiences with coaching and playing baseball and football and how his faith has helped him through these years. While the third book is more of a daily devotional book that you can fill with your own ideas and challenges throughout the week.
“There was time when [sports] meant more than it should and [the first and second books] serve as a reminder that God is greater than all of that and the third book helps you to keep accountable,” Stevenson said.
The books are all self published and have sold fairly well. The first two books together have only sold into the hundreds because it is not available in stores. Since he has just released “God is Greater” no one has bought it yet but there are high hopes for it. All of his books are available on Amazon and you can purchase one from him directly. On Amazon, the price of the book is $10.95 but one can buy directly from Stevenson for $10.
“That was thought process I had for a long time, how much to sell them for but one day my friend said ‘People buy a lot of things for $10’, but the purpose for writing them is for people to read them and maybe it would help them out in some way, so I still struggle sometimes to ask people for money,” Stevenson said.
The idea to write is not a new one. Stevenson’s friends in college said he was decent at writing so he began filling notebooks with ideas throughout the day. He wrote “Overcoming the World in Nine Innings” after he graduated college because he had a lot of time on his hands. He started doing blogs and other things to share his ideas through different mediums without just sitting and talking with people.
“I have always loved to write and the constants in my life, sports and religion, were easy to write about so it made sense to compose a book about them,” Stevenson said.
His purpose for the book was not to make money, it was not meant to be another source of income. He wrote the book to share his thoughts about sports and religion and he is content with its’ success.
“I never wrote any of the three to make money, they have been successful in the fact that people read them, enjoy them, maybe it could make a difference and direct someone on the right path,” Stevenson said.
One of Stevenson’s baseball players, senior Reid Powers, heard about the book and and was interested in obtaining one.
“I bought Coach Stevenson’s book to support him and learn how to incorporate my faith into my daily life, as well as sports,” Powers said.
